How to Redeem sUSDe? Cooling Period, Yield Stop, and Getting USDe Back

 /
3

Redeeming sUSDe takes two steps: first start an Unstake on the Ethena page, wait for the cooling period to end, then come back and click Withdraw to get your USDe back. Since March 2026, the cooling period has changed from a fixed 7 days to a dynamic model, and it now usually ranges between 1 and 7 days. From the moment you click Unstake, your sUSDe stops earning any yield.

First check whether you hold sUSDe or another "sUSDe wrapper"

Seeing sUSDe in your wallet does not always mean you can redeem it directly on the official Ethena page.

If you hold PT-sUSDe on Pendle, it does not convert back to sUSDe 1:1 at maturity. Instead, you receive an amount of sUSDe worth 1 USDe, and the actual amount depends on the sUSDe/USDe exchange rate at that time. If you deposited sUSDe into another protocol's LP or vault, you may need to exit from that contract first to get your sUSDe back, and then go through Ethena's redemption process.

The simplest way to check: open the official Ethena dApp (app.ethena.fi), connect your wallet, and look at the sUSDe balance shown on the page. If the number shown there matches the amount in your wallet, you can redeem directly there. If it shows zero or clearly less, your sUSDe is stored somewhere else.

Redemption steps: Unstake and Withdraw are two separate transactions

Redeeming on the official Ethena page requires two signatures.

Step 1: Start Unstake. Find the Unstake entry on the staking page, enter the amount of sUSDe you want to redeem, and your wallet will pop up a transaction request. After you confirm, your sUSDe is burned, and the corresponding amount of USDe enters a "cooling" state. Once this transaction is confirmed on-chain, yield accumulation stops immediately.

Step 2: Wait for the cooling period to end. The exact length of the cooling period is dynamically adjusted by Ethena based on the share of liquid assets in USDe reserves, ranging from 1 to 7 days. In most cases it is close to 1 day, but it may be longer when reserve liquidity is tight. Origin Protocol's documentation mentions that under concentrated redemption demand, large batch requests may take up to 5 days to process.

Step 3: Click Withdraw. After the cooling period ends, return to the Ethena page, find the claimable USDe, and sign a second transaction. Only then will the USDe return to your wallet. This step requires you to act manually; it will not arrive automatically after the cooling period ends.

If you do not want to wait for the cooling period

sUSDe usually trades on the secondary market (DEX) at a slight discount to its USDe redemption value. That discount reflects the liquidity cost caused by the cooling period. If you need liquidity immediately, you can swap sUSDe for USDe or USDC directly on a DEX or aggregator, accept the discount, and skip the cooling period. Origin Protocol's sUSDe ARM is designed specifically for this: it uses USDe to buy discounted sUSDe from users, then goes through Ethena's redemption process itself to earn the spread.

Which path you choose depends on how you weigh time and price. If you do not need the money urgently, wait for the cooling period and get the full amount of USDe back. If you need money urgently, sell on the secondary market and accept a small discount.

Two things to watch during the cooling period

Yield stops. Once you start Unstake, your sUSDe is already burned, and what remains in the cooling state is only "USDe waiting to be claimed." That USDe no longer earns any yield. If you only want to pause yield but keep your sUSDe position, Unstake is not the right action.

Do not start the process twice. Unstake is an on-chain transaction, and once confirmed, your sUSDe is gone. If you try to operate with the same wallet again during the cooling period, the page will not let you unstake the same amount again. Remember to come back and Withdraw after the cooling period ends, otherwise the USDe will remain stuck in Ethena's contract.
