A cross-chain intent quote usually has an expiration time. Once the "fill deadline" passes, the transaction is considered expired by the system. At this point, where the funds are refunded depends on the actual on-chain completion stage of the transaction.

Step 1: Determine where the funds are in the process
Cross-chain intent execution does not happen in one step. It includes at least two stages:
Source chain stage: You initiate the transaction, and assets are transferred out of your wallet. They are locked or burned by the bridge contract. If this stage succeeds, a confirmed transaction record is generated on the source chain. This is the "outgoing" record you can see in your wallet.
Destination chain stage: The bridge mints or releases the equivalent assets on the destination chain and sends them to your destination address. Only when this stage succeeds will you see the balance increase in your destination chain wallet.
"Past the fill deadline" means the system did not receive confirmation from the destination chain within the set time. In this case, the system judges that the intent has failed and triggers the refund process.
Step 2: Which chain will the refund go to?
Based on search results and practical operation logic, the refund location is determined by where the execution was interrupted:
Case A: Source chain transaction succeeded, destination chain not completed This is the most common and confusing situation. The transaction on the source chain is already confirmed (the block explorer shows "Success"), but the destination chain did not complete the final confirmation due to network congestion, insufficient gas fees, or contract issues. Refund location: Since the source chain transaction is irreversible, the assets cannot be "returned" to the source chain because they have already been transferred out of your wallet. In this case, the assets are usually locked or waiting to be released in the bridge contract address on the destination chain. If the intent execution times out, the system may trigger a refund operation on the destination chain, sending the assets back to your address on the source chain, or leaving them in the destination chain contract for you to claim manually. What you need to confirm: In this situation, a "refund" usually requires you to take action, such as initiating a "claim" transaction on the destination chain. The assets will not automatically return to your source chain wallet. You need to go to the bridge's transaction history page to check if there is a "Claim" or "Refund" button.
Case B: Source chain transaction failed or not confirmed If your transaction was not packaged and confirmed on the source chain (status shows "Pending" or "Failed"), the assets remain in your source chain wallet. No refund is needed in this case. Just refresh your wallet balance to confirm.

Step 3: Recommended actions after the deadline passes
Stop submitting duplicate transactions immediately: This is the most easily overlooked step. Before you confirm the status of the previous transaction, submitting more transactions will only make your funds harder to track and may even cause two transactions to occupy funds at the same time.
Check the "Order History" or "Transaction Records" on the cross-chain intent page: The status is usually more precise, such as "Pending (Timed Out)", "Refunding", or "Claimable". Follow the instructions on the page to see if you need to manually click a "Refund" or "Claim" button instead of just waiting.
If there is no refund option on the history page, be ready to contact customer support: Provide your source chain transaction hash (TxID) so that support can locate where your funds are currently stuck. They need this hash to track the transaction.
How to verify completion: Go to the transaction history page of the cross-chain platform or aggregator and check the order status. If it shows "Refunded" or "Completed", the intent has been fully processed. If it shows "Claimable", follow the page instructions to complete the manual claim process.
