What to Check Before Exporting an XPUB: Privacy Leakage and Address Tracking Risks
Before exporting an XPUB, you need to check not just mnemonic phrase security, but also a more hidden risk – the XPUB itself exposes all historical transaction records of all associated addresses. In the October 2025 FTX fake compensation phishing incident, victims were tricked into downloading a malicious tool to generate an XPUB, resulting in direct theft of their mnemonic phrases.

Three Questions to Ask Yourself Before Exporting an XPUB
An XPUB (extended public key) can derive a whole set of addresses. If someone gets it, they can see the transaction history of all your addresses but cannot touch your funds.
Step 1: Verify whether the scenario for exporting the XPUB is trustworthy
What to do: Determine whether the other party's reason for asking you to provide an XPUB is reasonable.
How to do it:
Legitimate scenarios: You are setting up your own block explorer, accounting software, tax reporting tool, or setting up read-only monitoring for a multi-signature wallet for your business – these are normal uses of an XPUB.
High-risk scenarios: The other party claims "I need your XPUB to send you funds," "XPUB is required for identity verification," or "XPUB is needed to link your account" – refuse outright. FTX has clearly stated it will never ask users to connect wallets or provide XPUBs. Cos, founder of SlowMist, pointed out that any request to download a tool under the pretense of "generating an XPUB" has a very clear intent to steal mnemonic phrases.
When is it done: You have confirmed that providing the XPUB is a reasonable requirement for that service or tool, not "verification for verification's sake."
Step 2: Assess the consequences of privacy leakage
What to do: Understand how much transaction history you are willing to expose.
How to do it: XPUB + a derivation index can generate a public key and address. In theory, anyone who knows the XPUB can generate all addresses under your account (up to 2 billion derivations). Once an address is linked to your real identity, all on-chain activity of all addresses can be analyzed and correlated.
When is it done: You clearly know that "providing an XPUB ≈ making public all historical transaction records of all addresses in this wallet" and you accept that trade-off.
Technical Check: Confirm You Are Exporting an XPUB, Not an XPRIV
Step 3: Distinguish between XPUB and XPRIV
What to do: Check whether what you are about to export is a public key (XPUB) or a private key (XPRIV).
How to do it:
XPUB: Starts with xpub (or ypub, zpub, depending on the address format). It can only generate public keys and addresses, cannot sign transactions or transfer funds.
XPRIV: Starts with xprv. Never share it. Anyone asking you to provide a private key or XPRIV is a scammer.
When is it done: You have confirmed that the string you are about to export starts with XPUB, not XPRIV.
Prerequisites: Your hardware wallet or software wallet supports exporting XPUB (Ledger, Trezor, Electrum, Sparrow Wallet, etc. all support it). Exporting usually does not require an internet connection, but requires physical confirmation via device buttons.

Risk Management After Exporting
Step 4: After exporting, limit the scope of XPUB usage
What to do: Do not share the same XPUB with anyone or any platform, unless it is a dedicated wallet you created specifically for "read-only monitoring," separate from your main wallet.
How to do it:
For bookkeeping/tax software: Ensure the software is open-source or reputable and does not require you to submit your mnemonic phrase. For software that supports importing XPUB, local data storage is preferred over cloud storage.
For enterprise or team use: Set access permissions to limit who can view the address list generated from the XPUB.
When is it done: You clearly know who this XPUB has been shared with, and after using it, evaluate whether you need to create a new wallet and migrate your assets.
Risk reminder: In the October 2025 FTX fake compensation incident, attackers tricked users via email into downloading malware to generate an XPUB; in reality, the software directly read the mnemonic phrase file. Any request to download a tool/plugin to generate an XPUB is phishing. Secure wallets all have built-in XPUB export functionality; no additional software download is needed.
After completing the above checks, how do you confirm the operation is safe?
Before exporting the XPUB, find the "Export Public Key" or "Account XPUB" function in your wallet interface – confirm that the displayed string starts with xpub, and that you can manually transcribe it without needing an internet connection or downloading anything. If you must use third-party software to obtain the XPUB, it means your wallet itself does not support this feature; abort the operation immediately.
