Your card was charged, but the merchant's page says the payment failed or nothing happened. This is not uncommon with stablecoin payments. The money usually returns on its own, but how and when depends on where the transaction got stuck. It's not a simple "yes" or "no." First, find the transaction in your exchange or wallet app. It will most likely be in one of the two states below.
Transaction Status Shows "Pending"
This is the most typical case. You saw a charge notification, but the merchant never received a success signal. In reality, the money was only pre-authorized and frozen — not actually moved to the merchant. It's like a hotel pre-authorization: the amount is locked but not taken.
What to do: Wait, no extra action is needed. If the merchant never finalizes the capture, the frozen amount is automatically released after a certain number of days. According to common platform rules, a pending transaction that remains unsettled for more than 30 days will automatically return the funds to your account. Some payment channels release the hold in as little as 48 hours. When the merchant settlement timeout expires, the authorization is automatically canceled — this is the standard logic.
Common reasons: a timeout between the payment gateway and the merchant's system, or the merchant actively canceled the order due to stock issues or risk control but didn't send the cancellation instruction to the payment gateway in time.
Transaction Status Shows "Completed"
If the status is "Completed," the money has already been deducted from your account and entered the clearing process. The charge is certain. The merchant shows a failure because their internal system didn't sync this successful payment. The platform cannot unilaterally pull the funds back. You must contact the merchant's customer service directly, provide your transaction hash (TxID) or the order number from the platform, and ask them to manually verify it and complete the order. If the merchant confirms they cannot fulfill the order, they will initiate a refund through the payment gateway.
After the merchant initiates a refund, the money returns via the same route. Such refunds usually take several business days to appear.
Risk Reminders and How to Verify
Note that the refund amount may differ from the original charge. Because stablecoin payment cards typically involve converting stablecoins into fiat currency for settlement, a refund is converted back into stablecoins at the exchange rate at the time of refund. If the rate fluctuates in the meantime, the amount of stablecoins you receive will differ. This is a standard process of international card schemes.
For a pending status, simply wait the platform-specified period and then check your account balance again. For a completed status, after contacting the merchant, watch your transaction history for a new record marked "Refund." If nothing appears after 7 business days, you need to open a support ticket through the platform's customer service.
