Does the Solana Freeze Authority Affect Selling Tokens?
Yes, it directly impacts your ability to sell. Once your token account is frozen, you cannot transfer, sell, or trade that token at all until the project team voluntarily unfreezes it. This has nothing to do with your wallet balance; it's a restriction at the token contract level — the project team can freeze your holdings without needing your private key.
Before You Buy: Check if the Token Has a "Freeze Authority"
Step 1: Check the Freeze Authority Status of the Token on a Block Explorer
What to do: Use Sol scan or Helius's Orb to check the token detail page and confirm whether the "Freeze Authority" still exists and who holds it.
How to do it:
Open Solscan, enter the token mint address (Mint Address).
On the token detail page, look for the "Authority" or permissions section. Find the Freeze Authority line.
If a specific address is shown, the freeze authority has not been revoked and someone can freeze your account.
If it shows None, the freeze authority has been revoked and this token cannot be frozen.
When you're done: You know for certain whether the Freeze Authority field reads "None" or shows an address.
Step 2: Verify Whether the Project Has Publicly Committed to Revoking the Freeze Authority
What to do: If the Freeze Authority exists, check the project's official announcements or social media to confirm they have formally declared that the freeze authority has been revoked.
How to do it: Search the project's X (formerly Twitter), Docs, or official website for keywords like "Revoke Freeze Authority" or "freeze authority revoked". Many projects perform this operation right after deploying the token and publish the transaction hash as proof.
When you're done: You have found a public hash or official statement proving the freeze authority has been set to None. If the project never responds directly to this question, treat it as high risk.
Prerequisites: You don't need a token balance or need to connect a wallet to view this information. Any wallet (Phantom, Backpack, Solflare) can look it up.
Key reminder: Freeze Authority and Mint Authority are two different things. A token can have no mint authority (fixed supply) but still retain freeze authority (able to freeze your account). A freeze authority that exists ≠ you will definitely be frozen, but it means the project team has the ability to do so.
If You Already Hold It, How to Check If You've Been Frozen
Step 3: Check Whether Your Token Account Is in a "Frozen" State
What to do: Enter your wallet address on a block explorer and look at the details of your token account for that token.
How to do it:
Search your wallet address on Solscan → go to the "Tokens" tab → find this token.
Click the "Account" address to the right of the token (this is your personal token account, not your main wallet address).
Look at the status field of this Token Account. If it shows Frozen, your account has been frozen.
When you're done: You have confirmed whether the status is Active (normal) or Frozen.
If You've Been Frozen, What to Do
Once frozen, as an ordinary user you have no permission to unfreeze it yourself. The power to freeze and unfreeze rests solely with the freeze authority holder.
Step 4: Contact the Project Team, Ask Why You Were Frozen and the Unfreeze Procedure
What to do: Contact the project team through their official channels (X, Telegram, Discord).
How to do it: Have your wallet address and the frozen token contract (mint) address ready, explain the situation, and keep a record of the communication.
When you're done: You have received a clear response from the project. If they don't respond or claim they "won't unfreeze", the tokens are permanently unsellable.
Risk reminder: A freeze operation only requires the project to send a single on-chain transaction. From "purchase successful" to "account frozen" can happen in just a few seconds. If the project is malicious, you have no window to sell after buying. This is known as a variant of the "Pi Xiu" trap (貔貅盘) on Solana — it's not a contract logic that locks sells, but the project manually freezes all real buyer accounts, leaving only their own insider addresses able to sell normally.
Common Reasons for Failure
Checking only the token name and hype without checking the Freeze Authority: This is the most common pitfall. Scammers deliberately create FOMO so you rush in without checking on-chain info. On Solana, many Pi Xiu scams show continuous selling on DEXs, but those sells are all from the project's own insider addresses; ordinary buyers' accounts were frozen long ago.
After doing the above checks, how to confirm safety?
You see Freeze Authority set to None on Solscan, or the project has provided a verifiable public hash proving they revoked the freeze authority — do not buy the token until one of these two conditions is met. It's not "mostly safe"; it must be "impossible to be frozen" before you even consider buying.
