If you see "Out of Gas," don't panic. You need to raise the Gas Limit—not the Gas Price. Paying more per unit of gas will not fix it and may waste money.

Key Idea
Understand why the transaction ran out of gas, then resend it with the right setting in one step.
Before You Resend: How to Check
First, look at the on-chain record. Go to Etherscan (or your network's block explorer) and open the failed transaction details. Find the row called Gas Limit & Usage by Txn. If Usage shows 100%, you have a typical Out of Gas problem—your limit was used up before the transaction finished. In this case, raising the Gas Price does not help. Gas Price controls how much you pay per unit of gas, which affects speed. Your current problem is that the amount of gas is not enough.
Correct Fix: Raise the Gas Limit
MetaMask Steps
Start the transaction again.
In the confirmation window, click "Advanced".
Find the "Gas Limit" field and increase it by 30%–50%. For example, if the default is 50,000, change it to 70,000.
Leave other settings like Gas Price or Max Fee at their defaults, then confirm.
Ledger Live Steps
Ledger Live usually calculates Gas Limit automatically, and it is enough in most cases. If a custom transaction fails, go to advanced settings and raise the limit manually.
Use a successful transaction on the same contract as a reference. On Etherscan, find a recent successful transaction for the same contract address, check its Gas Limit, and use that value.
Risk note: Raising the Gas Limit does not make you pay more. The network only charges for the gas actually used, and unused gas is returned automatically. Many people are afraid to raise it because they think the full limit will be charged. Then they set it too low to save a little money, the transaction fails, and the gas fee is still charged and not refunded—so they lose money instead.
How to Confirm the Fix Worked
After resending, check the transaction in a block explorer. Confirm that Status shows Success and Gas Used is below 100% (for example, 18.18%). That means your Gas Limit was high enough this time.
Common Reasons It Still Fails After Raising Gas Limit
Some users still see failures after raising Gas Limit. Check these two things:
Did you change the wrong setting? Some people raise Gas Price but leave Gas Limit unchanged. That will still fail.
Did you exceed the block gas limit? Gas Limit cannot be set infinitely high. A single transaction cannot exceed the block gas limit, which is currently 45 million on Ethereum mainnet. Wallets usually prevent you from exceeding it, but if you manually enter a huge number, you may see an error like "exceeds block gas limit".

FAQ
Q: How different is the default Gas Limit for a normal transfer vs. a smart contract interaction? A: A normal ETH transfer always uses 21,000 Gas. Smart contract interactions such as swaps or NFT minting can use tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands, depending on contract complexity. Never set the Gas Limit for a contract interaction to 21,000—it will definitely fail.
Q: Why am I charged gas when the transaction fails? A: You pay for computation, not for a completed transaction. Validators already used computing power to run your instructions. Even if it failed halfway, that work was already done, so the fee is not refunded.
Q: Is there a way to know the right Gas Limit in advance? A: Yes. On Etherscan, find a recent successful transaction for the same contract address and check its Gas Limit. Copying that value is far more reliable than guessing.
