MPC Wallet Service Shutdown: Can Users Migrate Independently?

 /
1

When an MPC wallet service shuts down, whether users can migrate on their own depends entirely on whether they have complete, undamaged private key shards or a seed phrase backup. If you have them, migration is possible. If not, you can only rely on the service provider – and once the provider stops operating, that path is cut off.

Conditions to Confirm Before Migration

  • Complete Private Key Shards: If the service provider gave you the complete private key shards when creating the wallet (such as via a seed phrase or an offline recovery tool), you can use them to rebuild your account in any compatible MPC wallet. ChainUp Custody explicitly states that users have permanent usage rights to the MPC system. After shutdown, you can obtain the full private key seed phrase through an offline recovery tool and import it into another wallet.

  • Recovery Mechanism Provided by the Provider: Some providers (like ChainUp) support both local seed phrase backup and cloud backup. Users can restore with one click when switching devices or if their local private key is lost. If the provider offers such a mechanism and the backup is in your hands, theoretically a service shutdown does not affect your migration.

  • Whether the Provider Cooperates with the Migration: This is the most critical point. If the provider refuses or is unable to export private key shards after shutting down (for example, servers are seized or keys are revoked), and you do not have a complete backup, the assets will be permanently locked.

Scenario A: You Hold Complete Private Key Shards or a Seed Phrase

You can migrate independently. The process is just like switching phones with a regular wallet:

  • How to Do It: Download any competitor wallet or open-source tool that supports MPC wallet import, select "Import Wallet", and enter the seed phrase or private key shard combination.

  • Completion Standard: The new wallet displays the same account address and balance as before.

Scenario B: Part or All of Your Private Key Shards Are Held by the Provider

You cannot migrate independently; you must wait for the provider to cooperate. If the provider shuts down and does not cooperate, your assets are locked.

  • Real Case: The Multichain incident in May 2023 is a bloody example. After its CEO was taken away by the police, all access keys to the MPC node servers were revoked. The servers ran on the CEO's personal cloud account, so no team member could log in. On July 7, user assets locked in MPC addresses were abnormally transferred out, and the CEO's sister transferred the remaining user assets to "preserve" them on July 9, then was also taken away by the police. The team was forced to stop operations due to inability to access servers and lack of operating funds, and warned all users: stop using Multichain services.

High Risk: The core lesson from Multichain is that the "distribution" of MPC, if dependent on a single person's cloud account or device, is essentially a single point of failure. If servers are seized or keys are revoked when the provider shuts down, and you do not have a complete private key shard backup, migration is impossible. This is why institutional-grade providers like ChainUp emphasize "users have permanent MPC system usage rights" – but this only holds true if the provider actually delivers the complete private key shards into your hands, and not just in promotional documents.

Common Failure Reasons

  • Mistaking "Account Login" for "Asset Backup": Many MPC wallets are created through social logins (Google, Email), which seems convenient. However, NFPrompt warned users in January 2024 that MPC wallets created via Web2 social logins may face service issues and recommended switching to self‑custodial Web3 wallets. Social login is only an identity verification gateway; the private key shards are still controlled by the service provider. Once the provider shuts down, logging in won't save you.

After Migration

  • Verification Method: After migration, check that the account address, asset balance, and transaction history on the new wallet match the original wallet exactly.

  • Next Steps: If you are using any MPC wallet, do a complete offline backup now. Look in the wallet settings for an "Export seed phrase" or "Export private key shards" option. If you cannot find such an option, it means the provider never gave you the complete private key shards – in that case, you should assess whether to keep your assets in that wallet.
