Prerequisites
The DApp or wallet you are using supports intent-based cross-chain transactions (e.g., UniswapX, 1inch Fusion, Gate and other aggregation entry points).
The interface shows you "I want to swap X for Y" rather than "choose a bridge, choose a network, choose slippage."
You have sufficient assets on the source chain to cover the trade and understand that funds may be locked until the order is completed or expires.
Step 1: Understand the three roles in intent-based trading
Traditional cross-chain: You = operator (pick a bridge, pay gas multiple times, wait for confirmations). Intent cross-chain: You = the person stating the demand, Solver = the executor, Settlement contract = the referee.
User: Only signs an "intent message"—for example, "Swap 1 ETH on Ethereum mainnet for USDC on Arbitrum, at least 3,000 USDC, within 30 minutes."
Solver: A professional executor. After seeing your intent, it calculates the optimal route (which bridge, which DEX, how to handle gas), submits an execution plan, and competes for your order.
Settlement contract: Verifies whether the solver's execution result meets your constraints. If so, it releases your assets to the solver; if not, it reverts or slashes the solver's deposit.
Completion standard: You understand that you only "sign" and do not "choose the path."
Step 2: Compare the operational differences between traditional and intent-based cross-chain

Step 3: Perform an intent-based cross-chain trade in real scenarios
Case A: Using a wallet or DApp that supports ERC-7683
ERC-7683 is a standardised interface for cross-chain intents, defining order structure, signature format, and settlement method.
Connect your wallet and select the "cross-chain" or "swap" function.
Fill in: source chain (e.g., Ethereum), destination chain (e.g., Arbitrum), asset to sell (1 ETH), asset to buy (USDC).
Set constraints: minimum amount to receive, quote validity period, order deadline.
Check the "fixed price" quote (usually already includes all fees), confirm, and sign.
Wait for execution. If the order is not completed before the deadline, it automatically expires; you can cancel and place a new order.
Case B: Intent-based trading from Bitcoin to EVM chains (heterogeneous chains)
Some intent protocols support non-smart-contract chains like Bitcoin. For example, buying ZEC with BTC:
Deposit BTC to the wallet provided by the intent protocol.
Express your intent (buy ZEC with 1 BTC).
Solvers match the trade off-chain and directly send ZEC to your Zcash wallet—no wrapped assets, no complex bridge operations throughout the entire process.
Completion standard: Assets arrive on the destination chain, wallet balance updates, and you don't need to know which bridge was used in the middle.
Step 4: Check your order status
After submitting your intent, view the status in your order history:
Status 1: Pending
A solver is matching and executing your order. If you set a deadline, wait until that time.
Status 2: Completed
Assets have arrived on the destination chain. Verify that the received amount is no less than the minimum you set.
Status 3: Cancelled / Expired
The order was not completed by the deadline and has automatically expired. Assets were not deducted (not locked) or have been unlocked and returned.
Completion standard: Seeing "Completed" status and the assets visible in the destination chain balance.
Common reasons for failure
Mistakenly thinking "intent" means "no signature needed"
Intent-based trading still requires you to sign once, but you are signing a "result commitment" instead of an "operation instruction." If you refuse to sign, the transaction cannot be initiated.
Risk reminders
Reliance on third-party solvers: You delegate execution to solvers. If the solver network experiences downtime or malicious behaviour (though typically constrained by deposits), risk remains.
Funds unavailable during the lock-up period: Once an order takes effect, your source chain assets may be locked or escrowed and cannot be used until the order is completed or expires.
ERC-7683 currently focuses on cross-chain swaps: The standard mainly covers swap and settlement scenarios; support for more complex operations (such as cross-chain staking and governance) is still being expanded.

How to confirm the operation is complete
Check that the order status in your history has changed to "Completed," then switch to the destination chain network and verify your wallet balance—the received amount and transaction record should be clearly visible, meaning the cross-chain transfer is complete.
If the order shows "Expired," re-submit the intent with a moderately longer deadline or adjusted price constraints.
