Dogecoin and Litecoin can share hashrate not by splitting one miner's power into two halves, but because one piece of Scrypt work is recognized by both chains at the same time. You don't need to buy two miners, and you don't need to spend half your time mining LTC and half mining DOGE. You just connect one Scrypt ASIC to a Litecoin mining pool that supports merged mining. When the pool builds a Litecoin mining job, it "packs" Dogecoin block information into it, so the same hash result can also meet Dogecoin's verification requirements.

Key Mechanism: AuxPoW Lets the Auxiliary Chain Accept the Main Chain's Work
This mechanism is called Auxiliary Proof of Work (AuxPoW). Here, Litecoin is the "parent chain" (main chain), and Dogecoin is the "auxiliary chain." The parent chain is responsible for generating the actual mining jobs, and the ASIC hashes the Litecoin block header as usual. The auxiliary chain (Dogecoin) is designed by protocol to verify that "this work really comes from a Litecoin mining attempt."
When the mining pool prepares a Litecoin job, it writes a commitment related to a Dogecoin candidate block into Litecoin's coinbase transaction. If the share submitted by the miner reaches Dogecoin's difficulty target, the pool can submit the corresponding AuxPoW proof to the Dogecoin network to try to win a Dogecoin block reward. This process does not require the Litecoin network to know that Dogecoin exists, and Litecoin's consensus rules do not need to change.
Why Scrypt, and Why DOGE
Litecoin and Dogecoin both use the Scrypt proof-of-work algorithm. Scrypt ASICs designed specifically for Litecoin naturally produce the type of hash that can be used for Dogecoin verification. If the algorithms were incompatible, no amount of hardware power would help.
But having the same algorithm alone is not enough. Dogecoin actively upgraded to support AuxPoW in 2014, which made it possible to "accept Litecoin mining work as valid Dogecoin proof." Both are necessary: Scrypt lets the hardware do the work, and AuxPoW lets Dogecoin recognize that work.
A Common Misunderstanding
Merged mining does not double your miner's hashrate, and it does not reduce electricity costs. A 100 TH/s Scrypt miner is still 100 TH/s. It just gives that hashrate the chance to be associated with rewards from two chains at the same time. DOGE rewards are not "free" independent income. They come from Dogecoin blocks actually found by the pool, and are then distributed according to the pool's rules.
Another misunderstanding is that "every time you find an LTC block, you automatically get a DOGE block." That is not necessarily true. Dogecoin's difficulty target is different from Litecoin's. One hash may meet Dogecoin's target but not Litecoin's, or it may meet both, or it may meet neither. The pool's share system records work contributions. Whether you actually get DOGE depends on whether the pool really finds a qualifying Dogecoin block, and how your chosen payout method (such as PPS+ or PPLNS) calculates your share.
What Miners Actually Need to Do
In practice, it is very simple: point your Scrypt ASIC to the LTC endpoint of a Litecoin mining pool that explicitly supports LTC/DOGE merged mining. You do not need to enter a separate Dogecoin pool address, and you do not need to run a separate DOGE mining program. The pool handles AuxPoW construction, submission, and reward calculation.
What you need to confirm is the pool's current rules: whether your chosen payout method is eligible for DOGE rewards, what the fee rate is, and what the minimum payout threshold is. Different pools, and even different payout methods within the same pool, may calculate DOGE reward eligibility differently.
