Why Does My Bitcoin Receiving Address Keep Changing? Can I Still Use the Old One?

The Bitcoin receiving address in your wallet changes every time you open it. This is not a bug. It is a default privacy feature built into modern wallets. Your old address has not expired and can still receive funds, but wallets usually hide it and do not show it by default.

Why Does the Address Change?

The Bitcoin blockchain is completely public. Anyone can enter an address and see how many transactions it has received, the total amount, and when the payments happened. If you keep using the same address to receive money, all your transactions are linked together. Others can easily tell that they belong to the same wallet and may even estimate how much you own.

To solve this problem, modern wallets automatically generate a new address for every incoming payment. Wallets like Bitkey, Blockstream, and BitPay are designed this way: every time you tap "Receive," you get a brand new address that has never been used before. It is like using a new door number every time you receive a package, so no one can connect packages received at different times.

Can You Still Use the Old Address?

Yes, you can. Bitcoin addresses do not expire. Your old address and your new addresses are derived from the same set of keys. The private keys are still in your control, so bitcoin sent to an old address still belongs to you, and your wallet can detect those funds.

But "can use" and "should use" are two different things. Once an old address has been used, its transaction history becomes public. If you keep receiving money at that old address, the new payments will be linked to the previous transaction records. This weakens the privacy benefit. BitBox's official documentation clearly recommends not reusing old addresses, and it hides used addresses by default to prevent accidental reuse.

One Important Exception

Most mainstream wallets, including Bitkey, Blockstream, BitPay, SwissBorg, and BitBox, keep old addresses valid. But SwissBorg has a special rule: addresses created before December 31, 2021 are no longer valid, and funds sent to those addresses will be lost. If you are using an older wallet version or have not updated it for a long time, you should verify this.

What Should You Do?

When receiving funds: Just use the new address currently shown in your wallet. You do not need to look for an old address or worry about whether the old address is broken.

If you already gave someone an old address: If that person sends bitcoin to the old address, the funds will still arrive in your wallet. But next time, you can give them a new address and gradually spread out your incoming payments.

If you are unsure whether an old address is still supported: Check the "Receive" page in your wallet. Most wallets show a new address by default, but used old addresses can usually still be found in the address list or "address management" section. Risks to Keep in Mind

Address rotation protects your privacy, not directly against theft. However, if your wallet software has vulnerabilities, reusing addresses may increase the risk of certain attacks. Bitcoin Optech notes that address reuse makes users of flawed software more vulnerable, such as when software reuses signature nonces.

A more practical daily risk is this: you do not need to manually switch back to an old address for "safety." Wallets automatically generate new addresses as normal behavior. Just follow the default logic.
