No need to overthink it. Binance Convert's hidden cost (the spread) is usually higher than spot trading fees. A real test compared the same trade: buying BTC with 1,000 USDT gave 0.01527895 BTC on Convert, while a spot market order gave 0.01532910 BTC. Spot bought about 0.33% more, which is roughly 3 times the 0.1% spot fee.
The gap comes from completely different cost structures.
Cost comparison: Binance Convert vs Spot
| Factor | Convert | Spot trading |
|---|---|---|
| Shown fee | Displays "0 fees" | Maker/taker each 0.1% |
| Real cost | Spread 0.05% - 0.5%, included in the quote | 0.1% fee, listed separately in trade details |
| Price source | Market maker quote, not order book matching | Real-time market matching, transparent price |
| Large trades | Spread may widen further | Slippage is controllable; can use limit orders to pay the maker fee |
| Best for | Small amounts, less common coins, and convenience | Regular buys and sells, larger amounts |
Why Convert's "0 fees" can actually cost more
Convert quotes come from platform market makers. They are not filled on the spot order book. The price you are shown already includes a price spread, which you can think of as a "hidden fee."
For major pairs like BTC/USDT and ETH/USDT, the spread is around 0.1%, similar to spot trading fees. But for less liquid altcoins, the spread can jump to 0.5%. The page may say "0 fees," but the exchange rate has already taken a cut.
Risk note: Convert quotes are dynamic. The rate shown in the preview locks for a few seconds, but if the market moves after you confirm, the amount you receive may not exactly match the preview. For large conversions, always do the math first and do not just click confirm.
When to use each one
Use Convert when:
- The amount is small (under a few hundred USDT). The spread in absolute terms is small, and convenience matters more.
- You hold a less common altcoin and do not want to find a trading pair on the spot market.
- You do not want to watch the market or place orders.
Use spot when:
- The amount is more than a few hundred USDT. The spread cost becomes clearly higher than trading fees.
- You have time to place a limit order and pay the maker fee (0.1%).
- You use BNB to pay fees. Spot fees can drop to 0.075%, giving spot an even bigger advantage.
What to do next
Next time you want to swap coins, check the quote on the Convert page first, then switch to the spot trading pair and check the order price and fee. Compare the two numbers and choose the cheaper option. The larger the amount, the more worthwhile it is to spend a few seconds comparing.
