You open equal-sized spot long and perpetual short positions, assuming your directional risk is zeroed out? In reality, you're likely still running naked — when your portfolio also holds altcoins, contracts with varying leverage, or there's a basis between perpetual and spot prices, your net Delta isn't a simple 1:1 offset; it's a weighted figure that needs careful calculation. Here are 3 steps to find your account's true net Delta.

Prerequisite: Understanding Delta's "Unit of Conversion"

Before calculating, establish one basic rule: all position Deltas must be converted into the same quote currency (e.g., BTC or USDT) before adding them together. Spot holdings are quantity × price; contract positions are also quantity × price. Only when placed on the same price coordinate can they be compared.

Core logic: Only by converting the Delta of different assets and different directions into a unified "BTC-equivalent exposure" can you know your true directional risk exposure.

Step 1: List the "Notional Value" of All Positions

List all your positions — regardless of coin or whether they are spot or contracts — uniformly converted into "notional value" denominated in USDT.

What to do: Summarize the direction and size of all exposures in your account.

How to do it:

  • Open your trading platform's "Asset Overview" or "Positions" page, and record the following three categories:

    • Spot Longs: Record quantity × current price (denominated in USDT) for each coin.

    • Perpetual/Futures Longs: Record notional value (= margin × leverage) and direction.

    • Perpetual/Futures Shorts: Record notional value and direction.

  • Sum all positive values for "longs" and all negative values for "shorts".

When is this step complete: You have a table that lists each position's "direction + notional value (USDT)".

Common failure reason: Only calculating positions you "remember," forgetting a few unfilled limit orders — if these orders are filled, they become actual positions and should be included in the calculation beforehand.

Altcoins present an additional problem: their volatility is typically 1.2 to 3 times that of BTC. If you miscalculate your "altcoin BTC equivalent," the actual Delta will deviate even further.

Step 2: Convert to a "Base Currency" — Calculate Weighted Delta

Convert the notional value of all positions into the equivalent exposure of a single base currency (BTC recommended), then add them together by direction.

What to do: Weight each asset's notional value by its "relative volatility coefficient" (Beta), then multiply by its Delta direction.

How to do it:

  • Formula: Net Delta (BTC equivalent) = Σ (Notional Value × Delta Direction × Volatility Coefficient)

  • Delta Direction: Long = +1, Short = -1

  • Volatility Coefficient: BTC = 1; ETH ≈ 0.7–1.1; Major altcoins ≈ 0.3–1.2; Small caps ≈ 0.5–2.0 (specific to historical volatility)

Practical example (assuming current BTC price 60,000 USDT):

You see, although the two BTC legs cancel out, the ETH spot long is still running naked. Net Delta is not 0, but a 24,000 USDT long exposure. You might think you are fully hedged, but in reality, if the market drops 10%, this ETH portion will lose 2,400 USDT.

When is this step complete: You have calculated a "net Delta figure" — a positive number means overall long bias, a negative number means overall short bias, and the magnitude represents the size of your risk exposure.

Risk reminder: Volatility coefficients are not fixed; they can amplify sharply during extreme market conditions. For instance, in extreme moves, some altcoins can drop more than 3 times the decline of BTC. Managing positions using Delta calculated in normal times will severely underestimate risk during extreme events.

Step 3: Check "Basis" — The Delta Deviation When Perpetual Price ≠ Spot Price

The price of a perpetual contract does not always equal the spot price. When the perpetual price is higher than spot (contango), the actual Delta of a short perpetual will slightly deviate from -1.

What to do: Adjust your perpetual position Delta using the basis.

How to do it:

  • Check your platform's perpetual contract price and spot index price.

  • Formula: Actual Delta ≈ Notional Value × (-1) × (Perpetual Price / Spot Price)

  • When the perpetual price is 1% higher than spot, the actual Delta of shorting 1 BTC perpetual is approximately -0.99, not -1. This means your short hedge effect is 1% weaker than expected, leaving a tiny long exposure uncovered.

When is this step complete: Confirm that in your net Delta calculation, the notional value of perpetual positions uses the "current perpetual price" rather than the "spot price".

Prerequisite: If the basis is less than 0.3%, its impact on net Delta can be ignored. However, when the market shows extreme contango or backwardation (exceeding 1%), it must be factored into the calculation.

How to Confirm Your Calculation Is Correct?

Divide the "net Delta figure" calculated in Steps 1–3 by your "total account equity" to get a percentage. This percentage is your "directional risk exposure ratio".

  • If this ratio is within ±10%, your portfolio is close to Delta neutral, and the impact of small price movements is manageable.

  • If it exceeds ±30%, you are effectively still betting on direction — either reduce positions or add opposing positions to correct it.

Take a screenshot of the result and save it in your memo. Next time before you hedge, glance at this number instead of relying on the feeling of "I think I'm hedged".
