Straight verdict: this is not an "either-or" question. Wallets are demoting official bridges to an optional backend. What Built-In Wallet Routing Does

A wallet's built-in cross-chain router is essentially an aggregation layer: you specify "swap X asset on Chain A to Y asset on Chain B," and the system automatically compares quotes, speeds, and slippage across multiple bridges and DEXs, picks the overall best path, then completes both bridging and swapping in a single transaction.

Trust Wallet's Swap function integrates multiple bridging protocols so users "don't need to interact directly with complex bridge protocols." OKX DEX aggregates 30+ public chains, 25+ cross-chain bridges, and 400+ DEXs; a single transaction can tap into multiple liquidity pools at once. Binance Web3 Wallet's cross-chain feature essentially merges the three-step flow of "deposit back to exchange → trade on exchange → withdraw to wallet" into one step.

In other words, you tell the wallet where you want to go, and it decides how to get you there.

Will Official Bridges Still Exist?

Yes. But their role is changing.

Official bridges remain one of the most secure settlement channels. Take Arbitrum Bridge and Optimism Bridge, for example – these are maintained by the project teams themselves and have undergone extensive audits and security verification. Wallet built-in routers are convenient, but a routing engine may steer your order to a bridge with lower liquidity, causing greater slippage loss than the official bridge would.

Official bridges also handle scenarios that wallet routing doesn't cover yet. When Tangem compared itself with Phantom, it pointed out that Phantom supports only 8 chains while Tangem supports over 87. A wallet router's chain coverage depends on how many bridges and DEXs it aggregates – no single wallet's routing engine covers every bridge right now, so official bridges remain the only option on niche chains.

How Should Users Choose?

Step 1: Check if Your Wallet Has a Built-In Cross-Chain Router

What to do: Check whether the wallet you use supports cross-chain swaps and which chains it covers.

How to do it, by situation:

Case A – Using a mainstream wallet (Trust Wallet, OKX Wallet, TP Wallet):

  • These wallets have already built cross-chain routing into their Swap or Trade interfaces. Open the app, tap "Swap" or "Exchange," select the source network and token, and the destination network and token; the system will automatically match the best path.

  • OKX Wallet's cross-chain bridge supports 20+ chains, charges no cross-chain service fee, and only requires network gas fees. TP Wallet claims most cross-chain operations complete within seconds and cost less than traditional cross-chain bridges.

Case B – Using a simple wallet or one without cross-chain routing:

  • You'll need to manually find a bridge. Open the DApp browser, visit the official bridge website (e.g., Arbitrum Bridge), connect your wallet, and carry out the bridging manually.

  • This method involves more steps and requires you to compare fees and times across different bridges on your own.

When is this step done: When you can confirm whether your current wallet supports cross-chain routing and which chains it covers.

Prerequisite: Your wallet app must be up to date. Cross-chain routing is a relatively recent feature; older versions may not support it.

Step 2: Choose Your Path Based on Transaction Size

What to do: Let the transaction amount decide whether you use the router or the official bridge.

How to do it:

  • Small trades (under $1,000): Prefer the wallet's built-in router. The system compares prices automatically, saving you the time of manual checking. Gas and bridge fees are relatively larger in small trades, and the routing engine can find the overall cheapest option.

  • Large trades (over $5,000): It's advisable to manually check the official bridge quote. The wallet router's "best path" is based on current liquidity pool states and may favor a low-cost bridge whose liquidity depth is insufficient for a large trade, causing even greater slippage. Open the official bridge page, compare quotes, then decide.

When is this step done: When you can judge which route to take based on the transaction amount.

Common failure reason: Users assume the router is "always cheaper" than the official bridge. But the routing engine's "best" may favor a path that is fast but has high slippage. Check whether your wallet allows you to switch strategies (OKX offers three strategies: "Overall Best," "Fastest," "Max Amount").
