Tokenized ETF Market Cap Growth: Has Liquidity Kept Up?

While the market cap of tokenized ETFs is rising, liquidity clearly hasn't kept pace. The core contradiction in today's market is: Market cap has doubled, but most of the liquidity is "dead" – the portion that can actually be traded smoothly is very thin. As a result, the market has two types of products: those that can circulate but lack real property rights, and those with real property rights that are almost impossible to trade.

Market cap growth comes mainly from assets moving "on-chain," not from trading activity

According to data from RWA.xyz, from March to July 2026, the value of distributed tokenized stocks grew from $951 million to $1.89 billion, nearly doubling. But this growth report points out the structural contradiction behind it: The market can be seen as a fragmented "Layer 2.5" system, where products with the strongest legal foundations often have the weakest liquidity and distribution capabilities; while the most actively traded wrapped products often have the weakest ownership rights.

From real-world cases, Ondo Finance once disclosed an example: a certain version of an AAPL token had an order book so thin that a trade of just $195 could cause 2% slippage, with a trading spread as high as 0.64% and even at one point trading at a 14.92% premium to the actual stock. This shows the huge gap between market cap growth and real trading depth.

Reasons for the liquidity dilemma

Even if a price deviation occurs, arbitrageurs cannot act in time to close the gap because of time and cost constraints, leading to frequent wicks and premiums.

Current mainstream approaches include: market-maker-led models that try to create arbitrage between on-chain and off-chain; incentive pool models that use platform tokens to attract liquidity. Regulated "real assets" – property rights, no liquidity

These products are typically issued by licensed institutions and backed by real custodial stocks. The assets are compliant and legal rights are clear, but due to compliance and wallet whitelisting, they can only be transferred and traded within a limited circle and cannot easily enter the broader DeFi ecosystem. On-chain price discovery barely exists. Market cap may be high, but the assets are like "locked in a vault."

Risk reminder: If you buy such products for "compliance" and "real property rights," be prepared: extremely low liquidity and high bid-ask spreads may cause you to face much higher slippage costs than traditional US stock trading, or you might not even be able to complete the trade.

Offshore "wrappers" – liquidity, no property rights

These products are more common on crypto-native platforms, using synthetic assets or third-party issuance models to allow users to trade tokenized Apple, Tesla, etc., on-chain with 24/7 access. But what users hold are often just price-tracking certificates, not legally meaningful stock ownership. Their liquidity depth depends entirely on the token pool's market-making situation, not the trillions of dollars in the underlying US stock market.

  • How to check: Before deciding to trade a tokenized ETF, check its order book depth, bid-ask spread, and historical price deviation. For example, see if there have been large premiums or wicks in the past week. If a token has a substantial total market cap but the liquidity pool on mainstream DEXs is extremely shallow, be especially cautious.

  • Next steps: If you have a trading need, prioritize products that clearly explain their liquidity source. For example, choose solutions that inherit traditional market liquidity, or compliant products that explicitly emphasize connecting to US stock depth and have independent asset proof. Until the liquidity dilemma is thoroughly resolved, consider tokenized ETF more as a "tool for gaining price exposure" rather than a traditional high-liquidity trading target.
