Wallet has a balance but you can't transfer out? How to check total assets vs available balance

 /

"Total assets" is the sum of everything you own converted into fiat currency, while "available balance" is the part you can actually transfer out right now. If the two numbers don't match, it usually doesn't mean your money is gone. It just means some of it is locked in a certain state.

First, understand the three balance concepts

On any exchange or wallet asset page, the numbers you see are usually made up of these layers:

  • Total assets: The result of converting all the coins, savings products, futures floating profits, and other holdings in your account into USDT or fiat at current market prices. It reflects your "paper size," not the cash you can use immediately.

  • Available balance: Spot coins that are not locked by any conditions. You can use them directly for withdrawals, transfers, or placing orders. If you just want to move a sum of money out, this is the number to look at.

  • Frozen balance: The part left after subtracting available balance from total assets. It is temporarily or long-term occupied by the system for various reasons, but in most cases it does not mean your funds are lost.

Here is a simple example: You have 1000 USDT in spot in your account. At the same time, you have a limit buy order worth 200 USDT still open in the market, and you also subscribed to a savings product with 300 USDT. Your total assets may show 1500 USDT, but your available balance is only 500 USDT. When withdrawing, the system only recognizes that 500.

Why is your available balance 0 or lower than expected?

Different platforms use different names and menus, but the reasons for locked funds can generally be grouped into a few categories. You can check your situation against these:

Funds tied up in trading. If you have limit orders that are not fully filled, running trading bots, or are participating in copy trading, the related funds will be reserved and cannot be used. The solution is to go to the order page and cancel open orders, or pause the bot.

Savings and subscriptions. Funds placed in flexible or fixed-term savings, lock-up campaigns, Launchpad, and similar products will show as "in savings" or "locked" before redemption. They do not count toward available balance. You need to go to the savings page and redeem them first. There is usually a delay before the funds arrive.

Deposit, withdrawal, and security lock-up periods. For coins bought through fiat channels such as C2C, some platforms set a T+N withdrawal lock-up period. You may not be able to withdraw them right after buying. Also, if you recently changed your login password, fund password, or verification method, many platforms will trigger a 24-hour security freeze during which withdrawals are blocked. New address withdrawal locks and address whitelist mode can also cause similar temporary restrictions.

Network and gas issues (mainly affecting on-chain wallets). In Web3 wallets, the most common reason your balance looks normal but you cannot transfer out is that you do not have enough of the main chain token to pay gas fees. For example, you have USDT on the BSC chain, but your wallet has no BNB, so you cannot start a transfer. Receiving does not require gas, but sending out does.

Compliance and risk control review. If your account triggers an anti-money laundering check, the source of your deposit is flagged as high risk, or a law enforcement request is received, the platform may freeze part or all of your funds. In this case, you need to submit proof of funds source as required by the platform. The processing time is usually long, and the result depends on the case review.

How to check and compare

On an exchange app's "Assets" or "Funds Account" page, you can usually see "Total Assets" and "Available Balance" side by side. If you cannot find them, try tapping a specific coin to enter its detail page. It will show the coin's available, frozen, savings, and other breakdown statuses.

A more important step is to verify on the blockchain. If you are using a self-custody wallet such as MetaMask or OKX Web3, the balance shown in the wallet interface can sometimes be wrong because of selecting the wrong network, node sync delay, or the token not being automatically recognized. Copy your wallet address and paste it into the block explorer for the relevant chain. Use Etherscan for Ethereum and BscScan for BSC. The number shown on-chain is the final source of truth. If the on-chain balance is normal but the wallet does not show it, it is usually a display issue. The assets themselves are safe.

For exchange accounts, if the gap between available balance and total assets is large, first check the "Frozen" or "Savings" details. If the withdraw button is grayed out or shows an error, use the error message to identify the cause. For example, OKX's help documentation categorizes errors by keywords and tells you whether it is a 24-hour restriction, T+N lock, risk control issue, or insufficient deposit confirmations.

When do you need to contact customer support?

Situations that require waiting: Security freezes usually lift automatically after 24 hours. T+N locks, insufficient on-chain confirmations, and 24-hour locks on new whitelisted addresses also fall into this group. You do not need to contact support for these. Just wait or follow the on-screen instructions.

Situations that require action: Funds placed in a savings product but you cannot find the redemption entry; your account is restricted by risk control and you received an email asking for documents; your on-chain wallet assets look abnormal but the block explorer confirms the balance is normal and you still cannot operate.

Situations that require caution: If the balance of your address on the block explorer has already dropped to zero and you never initiated a transfer, your private key may have been leaked and your assets may have been moved by someone else. In this case, stop using that wallet, move any remaining assets to a new address, and check your device security.
