The bottom line: Smart wallets can transfer without ETH thanks to a mechanism called Paymaster that covers gas fees on your behalf. It's not magic, and your wallet isn't giving you a free ride — a third party (usually the project, wallet provider, or an onchain protocol) pays for you, then recovers the cost in other ways.

Who Pays the Gas for You?
The essence of gas sponsorship is that a third party broadcasts your transaction onchain and pays the network fee. In practice, there are three common models:
Wallet provider subsidy (OneKey model): The wallet provider (like OneKey) directly pays your gas fee, no extra contract or account setup needed. For instance, OneKey offers up to 10 gas-sponsored transactions per day for eligible users on Ethereum and Arbitrum, using wallet version 6.5.0 or above.
Stablecoin-based gas payment (GasFree / DAppso model): This is closest to the "transfer without ETH" scenario. You don't need to hold native tokens (like TRX or ETH). When you send USDT, the fee is deducted directly from the USDT you're sending, and the service provider pays the native token gas. imToken's integrated DAppso feature works this way: first-time activation costs 1.5 USDT, then each transfer charges around 1.5 USDT from your balance.
Onchain smart contract sponsorship (Account Abstraction / Paymaster): This is the core mechanism of the ERC-4337 account abstraction standard. Developers deploy a Paymaster smart contract with a connected fund pool. When a user initiates a transaction from a smart contract wallet, the Paymaster contract validates and pays the gas. Coinbase Developer Platform's Paymaster service uses this architecture on Base mainnet, with fees shown in monthly billing.
How to Tell Which Model You're Using
Open your wallet and look at the transfer screen hints:
Case A: Before signing, it shows "Gas sponsored" or "0 ETH": You're using a wallet provider subsidy (like OneKey). Just sign the transaction; you don't need ETH in your wallet. After the transfer, the gas record will show the fee paid by another address.
Case B: It says "TRX-free transfer" or "GasFree": You're using the stablecoin direct payment channel (e.g., imToken's DAppso, TronLink's GasFree). You'll need to first top up a dedicated account with USDT, and this step still requires a small amount of native tokens (about 15 TRX). Once the dedicated account has a balance, subsequent transfers deduct USDT directly.
Case C: No special indicator, but the transaction succeeds after signing: Your wallet may have an integrated Paymaster underneath. For example, when using OKX or Binance Web3 Wallet in certain DApps, the gas fee might be sponsored by the project. You can check that the gas payment address in the transaction record is not your own.
High Risk Warning: When using stablecoin direct payment (Case B), the initial top-up step requires native tokens (like TRX) to create the dedicated account. Many newcomers think they never need ETH/TRX at all and skip preparing these, so they can't even get started. Also, gas sponsorship services often have daily limits, per-transaction caps, or API key-based rate limits. Frequent transfers may trigger unavailability, so check the provider's rules in advance.
Common Failure Reasons
Mistaking "no gas" for "free": "No gas" means no native token is required, not no fees at all. Stablecoin payment still deducts about 1.5 USDT from your transfer.
Outdated wallet version: OneKey's gas sponsorship requires app version 6.5.0 or above. Lower versions won't show the sponsorship option on the send screen.

After the Operation
Verification: After the transfer succeeds, check the transaction on a block explorer (like Etherscan, Tronscan). Look for a "Gas Paid by" field besides "From" and "To". If it shows a contract address or an address that isn't your wallet, sponsorship indeed worked.
Next Steps: If you plan to use the stablecoin direct payment feature frequently, consider topping up your dedicated account with a larger USDT amount at once (e.g., 20–50 USDT) to avoid processing each transfer separately. Note that different providers may have minimum top-up requirements (DAppso suggests at least 3 USDT), and the actual fee is displayed on the transfer page at the time of sending.
