Users in China cannot purchase Nexus Mutual cover. This is not a matter of operational barriers, but of eligibility — China is explicitly listed in Nexus Mutual's restricted jurisdictions, and KYC verification will directly reject you. If you are not in a restricted region, keep reading.

Becoming a Member is the Prerequisite for Buying Cover
Nexus Mutual is not an insurance company, but a discretionary mutual. Anyone who wants to buy cover, file a claim, stake NXM, or participate in governance must first become a member.
The membership process has two steps: pass KYC/AML identity verification, then pay a one-time membership fee of 0.0020 ETH. KYC requires submitting a photo of a government-issued ID. If verification fails, you cannot join. Membership is tied to one wallet address. The official recommendation is to use a hardware wallet to generate this address. You can change it later, but when filing a claim you must use the member address or be able to prove ownership.
Where the Funds Come From
Nexus Mutual's cover fees and claim payouts are denominated and paid in ETH, USDC, or cbBTC. The official documentation lists four acceptable payment assets: NXM, ETH, USDC, and cbBTC. NXM is the protocol's own token, ETH is Ethereum's native asset, and USDC and cbBTC are a stablecoin and wrapped Bitcoin respectively.
If you hold these assets on Binance or OKX, you need to withdraw them to a self-custody wallet (such as MetaMask or Ledger) first, then connect that wallet to the Nexus Mutual app to complete the purchase. Nexus Mutual has no payment channel connected to centralized exchanges.
What Cover Does and Does Not Cover
Nexus Mutual offers several cover products. The most common are Protocol Cover and Custody Cover.
Protocol Cover covers risks such as smart contract hacks/exploits, oracle failure or manipulation, severe liquidation failure, and governance attacks. It does not cover: asset price declines (such as depeg events), losses caused by phishing/private key leaks/malware, or frontend attacks (where the protocol itself is unaffected).
Custody Cover covers asset losses on centralized exchanges and custody services. Triggers typically include exchange hacks or withdrawal suspensions exceeding a certain number of days.
Cover itself is held as an NFT (ERC-721) and can be transferred or sold along with a position. Cover terms range from a minimum of 28 days to a maximum of 365 days. It does not auto-renew upon expiry; you need to purchase again.
The Real Claims Process
Filing a claim is not "fill out a form and wait for payment." When submitting a claim, you must pay a 0.05 ETH claim deposit. The outcome of this deposit depends on the assessment result: if the claim is accepted, the deposit is returned along with the payout; if the assessment result is a draw, the deposit can be withdrawn; if the claim is rejected, the deposit is not refunded.
Assessment is decided by vote of the Claims Committee. The current committee consists of three publicly identified experts, each with one vote. A majority vote (2/3) is required for acceptance. The voting window is 72 hours, and it can end early after all assessors have voted. After voting ends, there is a 24-hour cooling-off period during which fraudulent votes can be withdrawn.
The most common reason for claim rejection is "the loss is not on the address or position you listed at the time of purchase." Nexus Mutual requires you to specify the covered address or position (proof of loss) when buying cover, and this information cannot be modified after purchase. If you entered the wrong address at purchase time, or if you later moved assets to another address and then suffered a loss, the claim will be rejected — regardless of whether the loss itself was real.
After a claim is accepted, you have 30 days to collect the payout. The payout is paid in the asset you selected when purchasing.
The Actual Size of the Capital Pool
The size of Nexus Mutual's capital pool is key to understanding its risks. Based on available data, total cumulative claims paid are about 18.5 million USD, and the total capital pool is about 81.56 million USD. For comparison, a single Kelp DAO hack in April 2026 amounted to 292 million USD — 16 times Nexus Mutual's total claims paid over seven years.
This does not mean Nexus Mutual will not pay out, but rather that its underwriting capacity has a clear ceiling. If your loss is a large-scale event in the millions of dollars, the capital pool may not be enough to cover all claims. The Claims Committee's voting mechanism faces real economic constraints in such cases: assessors who vote to approve a payout will have their staked NXM burned when the payout occurs.
A More Pragmatic Assessment
If you are in a restricted region, there is no legitimate path to use this service, and attempting to bypass KYC is not recommended.
If you are not in a restricted region and decide to use it, my assessment is: Nexus Mutual is suitable as a supplementary layer of asset protection, not as a basis for assuming "putting assets in a protocol makes them completely safe." Its claims process is human-assessed, has a deposit cost, a 30-day collection window, and a rigid rule that "a wrong address means rejection." The most important thing before purchasing is: carefully verify the address and position you enter in the proof of loss, and confirm they are exactly the targets you want to protect.
For ordinary users, a more practical order of protection remains: keep the bulk of assets in a self-custody wallet, and leave only what is needed for trading on exchanges or in protocols.
